Film Scanning
State-of-the-art film scanning is accomplished using Heidelberg’s ultimate drum scanner, the Tango XL. Each piece of film is wet mounted to the drum using Aztek mounting fluid. It is then brought into NewColor and individually adjusted to bring out it’s maximum potential. Drum scanners offer the highest quality scans available providing a wider tonal range, greater color accuracy, superior highlight, shadow detail and higher optical resolution than high-end flatbed scanners or “virtual” drum scanners.
The digital file is then cleaned to remove scanning artifacts such as dust, and given a quick color and density correction in Photoshop in order to bring it closer to the original. This combination of scanner and software is unmatched by any other scanning system offering museum-quality digitization.
Flatbed Scanning
Flat art scanning is done using an Epson 10000XL and SilverFast software. The 10000’s large bed (12"x18") allows for scanning of larger pieces than a standard scanner. Pieces larger than 12"x18" can be scanned in sections and joined together in Photoshop.

We offer digital retouching in Adobe Photoshop. This includes image optimization, restoration, enhancement, and prepress. Please contact us for a price estimate.
We offer a wide range of substrates to mount your prints on. Depending on your budget and end-use, we can recommend a substrate board that suits your needs. Most of our substrates are available at 5ft x 10ft. Some of our most common substrates include:
- White and Black Foamcore (3/16" or 1/2")
- Chipboard / Showcard (1/16")
- Acid Free Ragboard (White 4 ply)
- 1/8" Masonite (Hardboard) (1/8" or 1/4") - Edges can be bevelled / blackened
- White and Black Gatorboard (3/16" or 1/2") - Other thicknesses available
- White and Black Sintra (3/16" or 1/2") - Other thicknesses available
- Clear Acrylic (1/8" or 1/4") - Other colors & thicknesses available
- White Dibond (1/8")
In addition to mounting to the above substrates, we can add a lamination to provide protection to your print. In certain cases where the substrate is rigid, we can also add a recessed backframe for easy and secure hanging.
Facemounting to Acrylic (Second-Surface Mounting)
This is one of our most popular mounting techniques whereby the print is facemounted (second-surface) to acrylic. Using this technique, your image colors appear more brilliant and sharper than in a traditional picture frame due to there being no space between the acrylic and print. This process is favored by our fine art community and can be found in fine-art galleries and museums around the world.
Overlamination of a mounted image will enhance the look of your display and provide protection from moisture, fingerprints and abrasion - and fading under normal interior lighting conditions. Premium vinyl films up to 60” wide ensure excellent adhesion to inkjet output. All of our vinyl films have UV inhibitors.
Choose from:
- Matte to eliminate reflection without sacrificing color definition; our most popular film
- Semi-matte to give a clear bright finish and enhance color and contrast
- Gloss provides the most in sheen, clarity, color and contrast
- Scuff resistant for extra durability and a matte pebbled texture
- Dry erase (scribe) for a gloss finish and a surface for write-on-wipe-off applications
Polyester (Economic) Films
Ideal to increase the longevity of your prints and to protect from general wear and tear. These are suitable for commercial applications. These films do not offer protection from fading. Matte and gloss finishes are available. We carry thicknesses of 3 Mil, 5 Mil and 10 Mil.
Enhance the appearance of your print and protect the surface against wear and tear. Polyester film is applied to both sides of a paper sheet as it is fed through heated rollers. The heat activates the adhesive and bonds the film to the paper. The finished piece has a sealed lip of film around the sheets edges which provide durability. Adhesion of film can be risky in areas of heavy ink coverage, however with our complimentary testing, we ensure a good result for the final product.
